The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice to India after a bomb exploded in Kashmir, killing at least 40 Indian paramilitary police.

The attack happened on the road between Jammu and Srinagar when a car filled with explosives rammed a bus carrying troops to Srinagar.

The FCO said today that it was advising against all travel to:

* the immediate vicinity of the border with Pakistan, other than at Wagah
* Jammu and Kashmir, with the exception of (i) travel within the city of Jammu, (ii) travel by air to the city of Jammu, and (iii) travel within the region of Ladakh
* Manipur, except the state capital Imphal, where the FCO advise against all but essential travel

Pakistan-based Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammad said it was behind yesterday’s attack, which was the deadliest on Indian forces in Kashmir since the insurgency against Indian rule began in 1989.

Both India and Pakistan claim rights over all of Muslim-majority Kashmir but only control parts of it.
