FCO updates travel advice in light of no-deal Brexit

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Brits travelling to EU countries if Britain leaves without a deal.

It is warning visitors that access to healthcare is ‘likely to change’ and is advising travellers check the NHS website and to take out insurance.

It said the UK government ‘has or is’ seeking agreements with countries on healthcare arrangements for UK nationals after March 29.

It is believed discussions are underway with officials in France and Spain but are not yet ratified.

Earlier this week, it updated its advice for all EU countries with regards to entry requirements.

The new advice said European Commission has proposed that in a no deal situation, after March 29 British citizens would not need a visa for short stays in the Schengen area or elsewhere in the EU.

This applies for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Travel to EU countries currently outside the Schengen area (Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus) would not count towards the 90-day total.

In addition, on arrival in the Schengen Area, visitors may be asked to confirm that they have sufficient funds available for the duration of their stay.

"As non-EEA nationals, different border control checks will apply, and you may also be asked to show a return or onward ticket," said the FCO advice.

"UK nationals would not have an ongoing right to use the separate lanes provided for EU, EEA and Swiss nationals."

If the UK leaves with a deal, travel to the EU will remain the same as now until at least December 31 2020.
