Floods claim lives in south-east France

Thursday, 17 June 20103 min read

Two Eurocamp sites in the French Riviera have been evacuated due to flash floods this week.

The sites are are Les Pécheurs, Roquebrune –sur –Argens and L’Etoile d’Argens, St Aygulf.

Some 20 people have died and 12 are still missing in the catastrophic floods that hit the Var department of France on Tuesday.

And it is believed this grisly toll will rise as rescue workers continue to work their way through the mess left by the torrential rain in the south-eastern region of France.

Many of those who died were trapped in their cars as water rushed along village streets and engulfed the vehicles.

The devastation comes as the region, a tourist hotspot, gears up for thousands of summer holiday visitors.
A spokesman for Eurocamp said: “We are currently organising alternative arrangements for affected customers currently on holiday.
“We are also contacting customers due to arrive in the next few weeks to offer alternative holiday options.
“We are continually monitoring the situation and adjusting plans accordingly and extra staff have been sent to the Riviera to help customers.”

At time of writing, French tourism board A Tout France had no comment to make about the floods.
Water levels were as high as six feet in some town and villages but those levels are now falling although popular Frejus is still thought to be suffering additional rain.
