Florida Keys gearing up for return of foreign tourists
With travel restrictions for fully vaccinated international visitors to the US set to be lifted next week, the Florida Keys tourism council is ready to welcome back foreign visitors.
Tourism leaders are ready to showcase the island destination’s outdoor wide-open spaces, water activities and enhanced accommodations after a long pause.
“A visit to the Florida Keys… it’s like popping the cork on a bottle of champagne,” said Stacey Mitchell, director of the Keys tourism council, in a video greeting highlighting ‘healing properties of backcountry waters.’
The Keys continue to experience a steady decline in Covid cases, said Bob Eadie, the Florida Department of Health’s regional administrator, and it has one of Florida’s highest rates of fully vaccinated residents.
The Keys, a 125-mile-long island chain at the southern tip of the Florida peninsula, are connected to the mainland and each other by the Florida Keys Overseas Highway.
Vacationers can enjoy adventures in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys as well as Key West.
The last island in the contiguous Keys, Key West also is accessible via nonstop flights from several major US cities.
“The advantage of the Florida Keys is that we’re spread out,” said Dr. Mark Whiteside, the health department’s regional medical director.
“Over 100 miles and you have plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.”
