Former BA captain found not guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence

A former British Airways’ captain who was flying an ex-military jet that crashed at the Shoreham Airshow, killing 11 men, has been found not guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence.

Andrew Hill, an ex-RAF pilot, denied deliberately beginning a loop manoeuvre despite flying too low and too slow. His jet exploded on the A27 in Sussex on August 22, 2015.

Hill, who was a British Airways captain at the time of the crash, survived after being thrown out of the cockpit.

His barrister Karim Khalil QC argued that Hill, aged 54, had been suffering from ‘cognitive impairment’ when the jet crashed. The jury took seven hours over three days to reach their verdict.
