The 50-year-old worked for Thomas Cook between 1998 and 2005 in roles including UK chief executive and group chief financial officer.
He then became group finance director for WH Smith and currently works as chief financial officer for aircraft leasing company AWAS.
Stewart said: “M&S is one of the strongest retail brands. I’m delighted to be joining the company and returning to the retail sector.”
M&S chief executive Marc Bolland said: “Alan has an impressive track record and will be joining us with extensive experience of retail and other highly competitive industries including travel and banking.”
Stewart will join M&S by the end of October.
