Germany plans to shift domestic flight passengers onto trains
Following measures being taken in France to shift short domestic flight capacity to the railways, Germany plans a similar move. Germany’s rail operator Deutsche Bahn and the aviation industry, including Lufthansa, have agreed to move about 20% of domestic flight passengers onto trains to reduce emissions.
They have targeted to move up to 4.3 million domestic flight passengers onto trains. It will do this by building new direct high-speed train connections and improving rail links at airports.
They say CO2 emissions could be reduced by a sixth.
