The global cruise ship industry has its largest order book ever, surpassing a whopping $50 billion, delegates heard this week during Seatrade Cruise Global.
It represents orders for 74 new cruise ships which will enter service over the next decade and shows the growing trend for huge mega ships.
"Never in the history of cruise shipping have we had an order book which has had these advanced bookings for 10 years, this is amazing. The $51 billion shows the commitment for the industry for long-term investment," said keynote speaker and MSC Cruises executive chairman, Pierfrancesco Vago.
He said 45 of these ships are over 100,000 gross tons and a further six exceed 200,000gt.
While the industry is in arguably its best shape ever, thanks in no small part to the surging market in Asia, geopolitical issues could still impact the good times.
‘We’ve got things going good now. The only thing that stops our industry is people’s inability to travel. As long as the world stays open to travel, we’ll do fine. If the world shifts to closed borders that would be a problem," said Carnival Corp CEO Arnold Donald.
