Several luxury hotel chains have issued public apologies after a hidden camera expose in China showed questionable cleaning practices in luxury hotels.
The footage reveals poor sanitation and unhygienic cleaning by housekeeping staff, including cups being wiped with the same cloths used to clean toilets.
The hidden footage was first seen on social media platform Weibo and has since been viewed more than 30 million times.
It sparked calls from Chinese tourism authorities to investigate 14 hotels in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities.
Shangri-La, Sheraton Waldorf and Astoria have all apologised and vowed to strengthen its housekeeping standards.
The Park Hyatt in Beijing also apologised for what it called an ‘isolated occurance’.
Tourism officials in Beijing have asked the city’s health department to carry out sanitary inspections on four hotels that were shown in the video.
In all, the blogger, known as ‘Huazong’, recorded footage in more than 100 hotels across China.
