Grasshopper invasion takes over Las Vegas

Wednesday, 30 Jul, 2019 0

The Las Vegas strip is used to its fair share of bizarre sights but never before has Sin City witnessed the spectacle of such a huge swarm of grasshoppers.

The invasion is so great it can apparently be seen on weather radars.

Entomologists are blaming the unusually wet weather so far this year for a mass exodus of the grasshoppers to Vegas.

They are pallid-winged grasshoppers, which are endemic to the Americas and seem to be hanging around in the city attracted to the bright neon lights.

They have been flocking to the pyramid shaped Luxor Hotel which features the Sky Beam ultraviolet light.

This symbolism has unsurprisingly sparked apocalyptic theories for people who remember studying the biblical Plagues of Egypt at school.

Although there have been reports of people ‘freaking out’ Nevada state entomologist Jeff Knight says there are harmless grasshoppers and certainly not disease carrying locusts.

They are attracted to ultraviolet light and could linger in the city for a ‘few weeks.’

Knight said it is not unprecedented.

There have been a few similar incidents like this in the past 30 years, he said.
