Hawaii Volcanoes National Park visitation drops to 50-year low
The national park just had its worst year for tourism since 1966. Visitor arrivals were down 57% as pandemic travel restrictions upended state-wide tourism.
It was even worse than 2018 when visitation was heavily impacted due to the eruption of Kilauea volcano. Officials said there was a minor improvement with 222,240 visitors in January 2021, which is down nearly 20% on the same period in 2020 prior to the pandemic.
