Hawaiian Airlines spurns Airbus for Boeing Dreamliner order

Wednesday, 7 March 20183 min read

Hawaiian Airlines has dealt Airbus a blow to become Boeing’s latest potential Dreamliner customer.

Hawaiian had ordered six Airbus A330-800s but has scrapped that in favour of signing a non-binding letter of intent for 10 Boeing 787-9 jets.

The deal is valued at $2.82 billion at current list prices and has an option to buy an additional 10.

The first Dreamliner is expected for delivery in early 2021, Hawaiian said.

"The Dreamliner combines excellent comfort for our guests with fantastic operational performance, and will allow us to continue modernizing our fleet into the next decade," said Hawaiian Airlines CEO Peter Ingram.

The jets will be powered by General Electric GEnx engines.

The 787-9 can carry up to 290 passengers and uses about 20% less fuel that the aircraft it will be replacing.
