Heathrow posts first post-pandemic profit
Heathrow Airport is back in the black for the first time since the pandemic.
It returned to profit for the first time since 2019, posting a 2023 pre-tax profit of £38 million.
It is a turn around from losses of £684 million the previous year.
There was a 28.6% increase in passenger traffic to 79.2 million, thanks to its busiest-ever December.
In 2019, it handled 80.9 million air travellers.
It took the opportunity to again cite the ‘huge cost challenge’ imposed by the aviation regulator, for capping the airport fees it planned to charge airlines.
“2023 was a good year for Heathrow from a challenging start to a great finish, said Thomas Woldbye, Heathrow’s new CEO.
“We delivered much improved service for our customers, and managed to turn a small profit after three consecutive years of losses.”
“Although in 2024 we are expected to deliver even further improved service to more passengers, but with airport charges cut by 20% in real terms.”
