Heavy snow in Japan causes mass flight cancellations
Heavy snow caused travel chaos across Japan with hundreds of cancellations to flights and trains as well as widespead power outages.
"A strong winter pressure pattern is causing heavy snow, mainly along the Sea of Japan side of the country from northern to western Japan, with some areas experiencing record snowfall," government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno said.
"The amount of snow is expected to increase Tuesday. Increased caution and vigilance are still required."
Nearly 200 domestic flights were cancelled since Sunday due to the snow, while 200 passengers were snowed in overnight on a local train.
Japan’s big two airlines All Nippon Airways and JAL cancelled most of the flights.
Some areas reported record snowdrifts on Sunday.
Matsuno said no deaths or injuries have been reported yet.
