Holidaymakers evacuated in Greek wildfire scares
Holidaymakers have been evacuated from hotels on the Greek island of Samos after wildfires broke out.
One thousand tourists and residents were told to move away from beaches on the island and authorities moved guests from at least two hotels to alternative accommodation.
Authorities have warned there is a ‘high risk’ of fires breaking out in several other areas, including the southern Peloponnese region and on Crete.
The Foreign and Commonweath Office (FCO) told British holidaymakers to follow the advice of Greek authorities
"A wildfire has been reported on Samos, in Mesokampos village, which is close to Pythagorean. Two hotels have been evacuated," the FCO said.
On Friday, a beach on the Greek island of Leros was evacuated because of a wildfire.
Lakki beach and a nearby hospital on the island were evacuated just after lunchtime on Friday.
More than 50 people still on the beach after it was closed had to be rescued by the coast guard.
Leros is part of the Dodecanese island group, located between Patmos and Kalymnos.
