Holidaymakers warned over two days of strikes in Greece

Friday, 16 May, 2017 0

The Foreign Office is warning of disruption to ferries and public transport in Greece today and tomorrow as the country’s main unions carry out a threatened strike.

The FCO has updated its advice to say: "Greece’s two biggest public and private labour unions, GSEE and ADEDY, will go on strike on Wednesday 17 May 2017. Public transport and other public services may be affected.

"The Panhellenic Seaman’s Federation (PNO) has announced a 48-hour strike on 16 and 17 May 2017 and all passenger ferries across Greece are likely to remain in ports from 12:01 am on 16 May until 11:59 pm on 17 May 2017.

"Contact your ferry company or travel agent for more information."

The strikes were called as politicians began a four-day debate on whether to approve a new package of spending cuts that will extend the number of years Greeks have lived under austerity to more than a decade.

The austerity measures form part of an agreement between the Greek government and international bailout lenders and involve additional pension cuts in 2019 and higher income tax in 2020.

Politicians are due to vote on the measures on Thursday.
