Hong Kong airport again Asia's busiest international gateway

Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok remained Asia’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic in 2014, and the third worldwide, according to data from Airports Council International.

Around 61.8 million passengers on international flights flew in and out of the airport last year.

"We are very proud that Hong Kong is one of the very few airports in the world that ranks near the top in both passenger and cargo volumes," the report said Hong Airport Authority chief executive Fred Lam Tin-fuk.

Globally, only Dubai and London Heathrow had more international passenger traffic in 2014.

The figures represented a 6.1% increase on the previous year and also showed Hong Kong is the world’s busiest hub for cargo volume.

Authorities are still in discussion about whether to move ahead with plans for a third runway to cement its position as Asia’s biggest international gateway.
