Hoseasons positive about domestic market

Hoseasons is disputing predictions by VisitBritain that overseas visitor numbers to the UK are dwindling.

It claims that its own figures suggest the domestic market is set to benefit from more people holidaying at home in 2009.

Early booking figures, based on like-for-like sales in 2007, show a 15% increase in customers booking breaks for the following year.

Hoseasons said this trend has particularly been strong in lodge, holiday park and boating sectors.

Chief executive Richard Carrick said: “Our most recent figures show that there is still an appetite for holidays in Britain, and that domestic tourism operators will be well placed to benefit from the slowing economy.

“In fact some of our more popular product is already close to capacity for Summer 2009.

“Traditionally, in times of economic uncertainty holidaymakers ‘hunker down’ and stay closer to home. We firmly expect to benefit from this trend and see more people choosing to pack up the car and take a carefully financially managed break in the UK.”

But he said the industry must not sit back and rest on its laurels.

“Like any sector during a recession, there will be winners and losers,” he said.

Those with a strong business plan which exceed levels of customer expectations will be well placed to capitalise on any opportunities, he added.
