Hotel quarantine rates hiked
The government confirmed a big hike to the price of hotel quarantine for people returning from red list destinations.
Anyone who arrives in the UK from a red list country must by law book a stay in a quarantine hotel for ten days.
The current price is £1,750 including full board and required Covid tests, but is rising to £2,285 for a single adult, and up from £650 to £1,430 for a second adult in a shared room.
The Department for Transport said the price hike is to reflect the actual costs of providing secure quarantine facilities which also includes transport to the hotel, round the clock security, and any welfare services required.
However it has previously said it planned to raise the costs to serve as an effective deterrent to unnecessary travel to and from red list countries.
Anyone arriving from a red list country must book their quarantine stay in advance.
It comes as the government announced updates to its traffic light travel system, which saw India and several Gulf states being taken off the high risk red list.
