Hundreds of flights cancelled as tropical storm batters Japan and South Korea

Nearly 1,000 flights were grounded as an intense tropical storm drenched both South Korea and Japan.

Storm Tapah started battering the Japanese island of Kyushu before moving on to the southern coastline of South Korea on Sunday.

Japanese state broadcaster NHK said around 400 domestic flights were cancelled, and at least 500 flights were expected to be cancelled in South Korea on Sunday.

"Serious caution is warranted for violent winds, high waves and landslides," Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency said in a statement.

Tapah is the 17th tropical storm this season.

Tapah has so far been blamed for one death and several injuries, and was packing wind speeds of 126 kph.

Train services were also affected on Kyushi as well as power outages to thousands of homes.

The local government also warned of possible landslide risk in mountainous areas.
