INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS IS HERE!
Independence of the Seas, the newest, largest and most exciting cruise ship in the world sailed into Southampton on 26 April 2008.
Following 4 days of amazing launch celebrations, which included a live concert on the top deck from ‘Scouting for Girls’, Virgin Radio broadcasting live from the ship and a 2 day Caribbean festival, the last event in the inaugural season took place on the 30 April with the naming of the ship.
In an industry first, Elizabeth Hill from Chesterfield in Derbyshire was selected as Godmother of Independence of the Seas, the first time a cruise line has ever bestowed the honour of Godmother on a member of the UK public who has done extraordinary work to improve the lives of young people.
As Godmother, Elizabeth had the honorary role in the official ship naming ceremonies in Southampton, where she participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony and enjoyed a VIP experience onboard Independence of the Seas’ inaugural voyage.
