Indonesia Air Asia is disputing official figures that show it had the worst record for cancelled flights in June this year.

Reports in Bisnis Indonesia, carried by Bali Update (www.balidiscovery.com), show Indonesia Air Asia accounted for 47% (471) of 1,020 cancelled flight recorded for Indonesian air carriers in June.

Indonesia Air Asia is partly owned by Malaysia’s Air Asia Berhad.

In second place, Merpati Nusantara Airlines cancelled 293 flights, representing 28% of all cancellations in June. Garuda Indonesia was third with 93 cancellations (9%).

The Ministry of Transportation clarified that for purposes of data tracking a cancelled flight is any flight that is delayed more than 24 hours from its scheduled departure time.

Of the 471 flight cancelled by Indonesia Air Asia, 424 (90%) were cancelled for “business” reasons.

The lack of passengers or the lack of an aircraft were cited by Merpati Nusantara in 93% of its cancellations.

Indonesia Air Asia is refuting the data supplied by the government.

A spokeswoman said that the airline takes every care to minimise inconvenience to passengers when changing flight schedules.

Information on flight changes is advised to passengers by email, SMS or telephone calls, she said.
