It’s that time of year to take the train

Why travel by train? The answer: it’s autumn.

"Trains tend to be less crowded, temperatures are moderate, and the scenery is bursting with vibrant colors" this time of year, says Vacations by Rail.

The Chicago-based specialty travel company Vacations By Rail offers a variety of rail vacations geared towards fall travel – ranging from autumn foliage celebrations to the rugged American West.

A hallmark of many autumn tours is fall foliage, and Vacations By Rail offers 10 itineraries to see the annual displays of nature.

"One of the leading destinations for fall colors is New England, and new to this year’s product line is Fall Colors, Scenic Trains & Cape Cod, a 10-day escorted tour through Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut. Highlights include scenic rail excursions aboard the Maine Eastern Railroad, Conway Scenic Railroad, and Cape Cod Central Railroad as well as Amtrak’s Downeaster and Vermonter and scenic lake cruises.

Other popular fall getaways include the new Colorado Rail Adventure, an 8-day escorted tour beginning and ending in Denver and making a circle through the Colorado Rockies aboard six standard and narrow gauge trains including the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, and Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

Prices start at $1895 for the Colorado trip.
