Jakarta has extended closures of tourist destinations and entertainment venues for an additional two weeks.
The Jakarta administration had initially ordered venues to close from March 23 to April 5 and has now extended it until April 19, said Cucu Ahmad Kurnia, chief of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency.
Jakarta is by far the most virulent area in Indonesia, accounting for most infections and deaths.
Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has slammed the central government for dragging its heels over imposing more stringent social distancing rules.
He accused the health ministry of showing ‘no sense of urgency’ amid rising deaths.
The central government also imposed mandatory wearing of face masks outside the home.
From April 12 no person will be allowed on public transport without a face mask, Anies said.
The number of confirmed covid-19 cases in Indonesia has surpassed 2,000 with more than 200 deaths.
The virus has now infected nearly 1.3 million people worldwide.
