JAL systems restored after cyberattack

Japan Airlines has restored its IT systems following a suspected cyberattack.

Some flights were impacted on Thursday with many delays and JAL shut down its servers due to the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

Its systems used for data communication were overloaded due to a coordinated surge in traffic.

This can easily disrupt the normal operation of a website or server, and often come with a ransom demand.

The airline said it shut down the impacted servers and halted new ticket sales for same-day departures.

It also impacted other services accessed online by booked customers.

Local media reported it affected baggage tracking and the access to the mobile app.

JAL says that no customer information was compromised and found no malware virus on its systems.

Flights for 27 December onwards ‘are currently scheduled to operate as normal,’ JAL said.

About 40 flights were delayed as a result of the cyberattack.
