Japan’s biggest travel agency group JTB Corp. says customer personal information and passport numbers of 7.93 million people may have been stolen after a data breach.
The information includes customer names, addresses, email addresses and passport numbers dating back many years and thousands of passport numbers leaked are still valid, the company said.
"I apologize for causing trouble and worry to our customers and other people concerned," JTB President Hiroyuki Takahashi told the media at a press conference.
No criminal activity has been detected using the stolen data, JTB said, and police are still investigating.
The attack is thought to have originated from a phishing email attachment opened by a JTB employee.
JTB is Japan’s leading travel agency with a workforce of about 26,000 and has offices in more than 100 cities including Chicago, Houston, Miami, London and Sydney.
