Japanese captain failed alcohol test after Guam cruise ship accident
It is not just Japanese airline pilots getting in trouble over their boozy lifestyles.
The captain of a Japanese cruise ship on a Pacific cruise involved in a docking accident over the New Year holiday was also found to be over the limit.
The Nippon Maru ship was departing Guam when it hit a pier.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd and Japan’s ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism confirmed the captain had an alcohol level exceeding 0.4 milligrams, according to a US Coast Guard administered test.
The 22,000gt ship was returning to Japan after visiting Guam and Saipan.
The line said the captain was suspended pending the completion of an investigation,
The accident left a hole in the hull but none of the 372 passengers were injured.
The ship was unable to continue and remains in Guam for a full assessment of the damage.
Passengers were flown home in the New Year.
