Jetstar looks to re-coup air drama costs
Jetstar says it will consider legal action against the individual who caused a mid air drama over the weekend by checking a gas cylinder onto a Cairns bound flight.
Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway says the incident had a major impact on the airline’s operations.
“After commencing flight, some of our customers and a couple of cabin crew were feeling nauseous so our captain returned the aircraft to Brisbane and asked for an emergency landing,” he said.
“We determined this morning that one of our passengers checked in a gas cylinder. The 30cm cylinder contained butane gas, which at high altitude is dangerous as proven.”
“We have customers and our staff affected, we also incurred a significant cost for our airline, which we won’t be able to recover, in terms of accommodation, additional staff on hand and also operating a late night charter service,” he said.
“I mean, all that comes at a cost, tens of thousands of dollars just to charter an aircraft.”
“Our legal people will look at it and see if there is a way we can try to recover some of the costs,” Mr Westaway said.
Brisbane Airport Corporation spokesman Jim Carden said the passenger should have declared the item when he checked in at Brisbane Airport.
“All passengers are asked at check in whether they are carrying any flammable devices in their luggage and clearly he didn’t tell anyone,” Mr Carden said.
“I can see why Jetstar want to throw the book at him and frankly so do we.”
