Korean Air to arm cabin crew with stun guns

Wednesday, 28 December 20163 min read
Following a recent incident involving an unruly passenger, Korean Air will allow crew to use Taser stun guns.
The move follows criticism last week when US singer Richard Marx helped restrain a passenger.
Marx himself called out the airline over its handling of the incident.
New guidelines will also see more male flight attendants and enhanced training for all crew.
The carrier also said it will start banning badly behaved passengers.
"While US carriers have taken stern action on violent on-board behavior following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Asian carriers including us have not imposed tough standards because of Asian culture," Korean Air President Chi Chang-hoon said at a media briefing.
"We will use the latest incident to put safety foremost and strengthen our safety standards," he said.
The airline says only about 10% of flight attendants are male and will start ramping up the cabin crew hiring process to ensure there is a male flight attendant presence in the cabin on every flight.
Marx posted on social media about a ‘psycho passenger attacking crew members and other passengers’ during a flight last week.
He said he helped subdue the passenger and described crew as ‘ill-equipped and ill-trained’ to handle the situation.
