LA eyeing convention market with new hotels
Developers unveiled plans for a 1,000-room hotel complex for the convention center in Los Angeles.
It was called a “crucial missing piece” for the convention market that has lacked such a magnet for years.
The $750 million hotel complex will include a five-star Ritz-Carlton and a four-star Marriott Marquis.
“The proposed 124-room Ritz-Carlton would be the first five-star hotel downtown and, with the largest ballroom in the city, the planned 876-room Marriott Marquis would fill a void as a business meeting hub at the convention center,” said Latimes.com.
It took two years for the project to jell and represents the Los Angeles’s attempt to rival the glitzy high-rise market of Las Vegas.
At this time, LA is not even included in the top ten list of convention cities. Its largest show with 60,000 visitors is only ranked 29th nationally.
Some business has been lost to competitors Anaheim and San Diego, both of which have added rooms in recent years.
