Las Vegas dismisses safety fears after fatal shooting in the Strip

Friday, 22 February 20133 min read

Las Vegas tourism officials are insisting that the tourist hotspot remains a safe place following a fatal shooting in its famous Strip, close to major hotels and casinos.

Three people died and at least six others were injured after a "rolling" gun fight and crash involving several cars.

One of those killed was rapper Kenny Clutch. It is believed his Maserati was fired at by the occupants of a black Range Rover after an earlier dispute in the car park of the nearby Aria Resort and Casino.

Two other people in a taxi were killed in the crash. They were not involved in the shooting.

The shooting is the third violent incident to hit the popular holiday resort this month.

Two people were wounded in a shooting at a Las Vegas car park on 6 February and a tourist was stabbed in a lift at the Hotel Mandalay Bay on 16 February.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority issued a statement last night following a press conference by the Las Vegas Metropolitan (Metro) Police Department in Las Vegas.

"The LVCVA, resort partners and law enforcement work closely to maintain a safe and secure experience for our visitors and residents. Recent incidents, while unfortunate, were isolated events," it said.

"Las Vegas is among the safest travel destinations in the world and utilises the most advanced technology and training to maintain a secure environment.

"Providing a safe and secure experience is our top priority. According to statistics from Metro, violent crime in the tourism corridor was down approximately 13% in 2012 and is down nearly 11% so far this year. Las Vegas continues to be a safe place to visit."
