Las Vegas taps The Boring Company for tunnel project

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is betting on Elon Musk’s Boring Company to help speed convention delegates around Sin City.

An initial agreement with LVCVA could see high-speed underground tunnels built connecting McCarran Airport, downtown Vegas, the Las Vegas Boulevard Resort and the convention center.

The LVCVA issued a request for proposals last year and selected The Boring Company

"The selection of The Boring Company leads the way to the evolution of transportation overall in Southern Nevada," Steve Hill, CEO and president of LVCVA wrote in a blog post.

It would house an automated people-mover to get travelers around the city and could be operational within one year, Hill said.

The initial phase would comprise a one-mile-long section to the convention center.

The Boring Company opened the first test tunnel in Southern California and has also inked a contract for an express underground loop system in Chicago.

The LVCVA board will consider the proposal this week and could approve a contract initially costing from $35 million to $55 million.
