Last remaining Miami Beach Zika zone to be lifted

Tuesday, 09 Dec, 2016 0
Florida Governor Rick Scott is today expected to clear the last remaining area of Miami Beach under a Zika advisory.

South Beach is the last area still being actively monitored for locally transmitted Zika and the Miami Herald reports Scott will give it the all-clear this morning at an arranged press conference.

Florida health officials have progressively lifted advisories on three Zika transmission zones in Miami-Dade in recent weeks with just a 1.5 square mile area of Miami Beach remaining.

It covers part of the Art Deco District and the Lincoln Road area, both tourist hotspots.

Wynwood, Little River and a northern section of Miami Beach have all been declared Zika-free in recent weeks.

Health officials deem an area is free of the virus if 45 days pass without any new cases being recorded.

It is ideal timing for Miami’s $24 billion tourism industry as the high season kicks in this month.
