Legionnaires' disease linked to Las Vegas hotel

Thursday, 16 November 20173 min read

Health officials in Southern Nevada say they have linked more instances of Legionnaires’ disease to Las Vegas’ Rio Hotel and Casino.

Traces of the legionella bug date back to June when two guests tested positive after staying at the hotel.

That sparked an initial health investigation, and now officials say it has risen to seven confirmed cases.

All contracted Legionnaires’ disease while staying at the hotel and there are more than two dozen other possible cases being investigated.

“The entire Rio property is open and we have remediated all water sources. We continue to work with the Southern Nevada Health Department and have taken the additional step of voluntarily installing a new filtration system to help prevent a reoccurrence,” a statement from hotel management said.

“Regarding notifications, we continue to follow the guidelines provided by the health department. All customer issues and concerns are being handled promptly and confidentially.”

The Rio took immediate measures to disinfect the hotel’s water system.

Legionnaires’ disease affects people who inhale infected water droplets and the elderly or people with weak immune systems are most at risk.
