Liquid ban on US airliners relaxed
American airline passengers on Tuesday started to enjoy the benefits of a relaxed liquid and gel policy.
New procedures going into effect now allow most liquids and gels to be allowed in carry-on luggage. Containers, however, have to be three ounces or less and all of the items need to fit into a single, quart-size clear plastic bag.
Liquids purchased inside the security checkpoint area can be bought onto the aircraft again.
The tougher screening procedures were put in place last month after British police broke up a terrorist plot to assemble and detonate bombs using liquid explosives.
The ban was relaxed after pressure from airlines concerned about the added cost of more checked luggage. But Transportation Security Administration chief Kip Hawley said tests showed tiny amounts of substances that can fit into a quart-size bag could not blow up an airline.
