Live TV on board with SAS
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will add four channels of live television this month to SAS Net Access, its in-flight high-speed wireless Internet service. Beginning January 23, SAS passengers from Australia will be able to view live programs on their computers from CNBC/MSNBC, BBC World, EuroNews and Eurosportnews on flights between Asia and Scandinavia as well as the US and Scandinavia.
Since March 2005, SAS passengers have been able to access the Internet during flights through SAS Net Access, a wireless high-speed Internet service provided by Connexion by Boeing (CBB). More than 30,000 SAS passengers used the service in 2005 onboard SAS long-haul flights between it’s Asian hubs and Copenhagen and also on the US to Scandinavia routes.
The latest research by Connexion by Boeing is showing that for over half of those questioned, access to the internet has a large influence on their future choice of airline. “This is something that SAS can clearly see as the numbers of Net Access users are growing each month”, says Lars Sandahl Sorensen.
Scandinavian Airlines offers high-speed wireless Internet access on all of its long-haul flights. SAS operates services from Bangkok, Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo to its hub, Copenhagen and services from Copenhagen and Stockholm, to New York (EWR), Washington, D.C., Chicago and Seattle with Airbus A340 and A330 aircraft.
Effective January 31, the price for SAS Net Access will be reduced to USD$26.95 for unlimited use for an entire flight, including connecting flights. Also effective January 31, users who choose to use the service for a shorter period will receive 30 extra minutes and will pay only USD $9.95 for an hour. Payment can be made with Eurobonus points, all usual credit cards and Associated Service Providers.
All passengers equipped with a handheld computer or a laptop with a wireless network card can use the service.
According to surveys by Connexion by Boeing of passengers of the several airlines providing the service, 90% of onboard users send and receive e-mail to catch up on work, 74% surf the Internet and 41% stay in touch with family and friends.
