London Heathrow passenger traffic still down 90 per cent

Friday, 12 Jul, 2021 0

London Heathrow passenger traffic remains nearly 90% down on pre-pandemic levels.

The airport revealed only 957,000 passengers passed through in June compared with 7 million in June 2019.

It is much lower than several EU rival airports.

Airport bosses said a shortage of transatlantic links with the US is costing the country at least £23million a day.

US traffic to the UK is down by about 80%, while direct flights to the EU have recovered and is down only 40%.

"While its fantastic news that some double-vaccinated passengers will no longer need to quarantine from amber countries, ministers need to extend this policy to US and EU nationals if they want to kickstart the economy," Heathrow Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye said.

"These changes will be critical for exporters who are losing out to EU rivals," he added.

The airport has resumed using both runways and reopens Terminal 3 this week.

Heathrow plans to offer fast-track dedicated lanes for fully-vaccinated arrivals from selected cities.
