Lyft hit with another sexual assault lawsuit

Thursday, 05 Dec, 2019 0

Another lawsuit was filed against ride sharing service Lyft, alleging multiple incidents of sexual assault including rape by drivers.

Twenty plaintiffs – some mdeia outlets report one is male – allege they were subjected to sex assaults during a ride and accused Lyft of ignoring their complaints.

Assaults included rape and groping in multiple states such as California, New York, and Tennessee.

The suit claims Lyft has inadequate safety precautions and lax screening of drivers despite introducing new safety protocols recently.

They were introduced after a previous lawsuit was filed in September.

New safeguards included an in-app ‘Call 911’ button and expanded driver training.

However the latest lawsuit says this has had little effect as eight of the plaintiffs were attacked since these came into force.

"During the last three months, Lyft had ample opportunity to make changes to ensure the safety of female passengers," said attorney Mike Bomberger.

"But instead of protecting women, the company chose to invest in a costly public relations campaign with no regard to safety."

Lyft said it has introduced more than 15 new safety measures, which include criminal background checks of drivers ‘to ensure we are constantly tracking any level of problematic behaviour.’

During the filing of the first lawsuit, attorneys uncovered 100 cases of reported sexual assault by Lyft drivers in California alone over a one-year period from 2015 to 2016.
