New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a $10 billion plan to finally give New York the airport it deserves.
Addressing the Association for a Better New York on Wednesday, Cuomo says New York’s JFK lags behind many overseas airports and the project will transform JFK into a world-class hub with improved access.
"JFK is ranked 59th out of the top 100 international airports. Time has passed us by. We have to catch up," Cuomo said.
The current 60 million travellers who use the airport will swell to 100 million by 2050.
Terminals will be rebuilt or expanded and linked to each other.
They will be accessible via one ring roadway and the AirTrain rail service will be expanded.
To beef up security and ease passenger flow within terminals, a facial recognition system has been recommended by the governor’s expert advisory panel.
The governor expects up to $7 billion to come from private funding while the state Department of Transportation will likely pledge up to $2 billion for road improvements.
