Man killed and others injured in nightclub blast

A man has been killed and others injured in a nightclub blast in Mombasa, Kenya.

The attack comes a day after the US Embassy warning of an imminent attack on the city.

Police said the cause of the explosion was not immediately clear but Mombasa has been struck by a series of blasts since Kenya sent troops into Somalia in October to crush Islamist militants, reports Reuters.

The US warning said: "This is to alert all US citizens in Kenya, or planning to travel to Kenya in the near future, that the US embassy in Nairobi has received information of an imminent threat of a terrorist attack in Mombasa.

"All US government travel to Mombasa is suspended until July 1."

France’s Embassy in Nairobi had also warned its citizens to be "extremely vigilant" in Mombasa and the surrounding area.

The British Foreign Office said on its website: "There was a reported bomb blast on 24 June 2012 in Mishomoroni, 10 km from Mombasa. A number of people are reported to have been injured. There are no reports of British casualties."

Police reports suggest a suspect is being held.
