It is very rare indeed that you come across a place, where listening to the sound of silence is one of the most strenuous things that you can do!
It may be because Matamanoa Island Resort, which I visited during my whirlwind trip around Fiji, does not take children under 12, but whatever it was, it was certainly all encompassing upon arrival at Matamanoa and The Mole could certainly visualise two week lying here in the sun!
Matamanoa Island Resort rises out of the Pacific, some 30kms west of Nadi and is perched on the ocean edge of a dormant volcanic cone, providing a small, intimate and very secluded experience.
The island is covered dense bush and palm trees, with the island fringed by a classic, white perfect, curved sandy beach, with coral reefs right next to the beach and great diving and snorkelling, that is if listenting to the sound of silence becomes too much and you just have to do something!
The villas, bures and everything else in Matamanoa have all been created for adults who want to forget the stresses and stains of daily life at work, allowing guests to sit back, swing in a hammock and do absolutely nothing!
Of course, contrary to what the Mole is seeking out of a holiday, Matamanoa Island Resort also offers a very wide range of leisure activities and a beautiful pool, with a bar right alongside – what more could you ask for!
The Mole met with the GM of Matamanoa, Patrick Wong, who told The Mole over asuperb lunch of freshly caught grilled fish that Matamanoa was Kiwi owned and in a stunning location with superb beaches and reefs right on the doorstep.
So, who should choose Matamanoa?
This really is a place for that romantic break or a wedding or renewal of vows, overlooking the Pacific and that is what many of the guests seemed to be doing.

As The Mole was only there a short time, a number of chats took place with all guests speaking of the excellent standard of the Resort, with the key words being small, seclude and private, which in the context, it seemed rather intrusive to rock on up and interview guests having such peaceful time, nevertheless the ones I spoke with briefly said that they love Matamanoa and had no issues whatsoever with being in Fiji, did not feel unsafe in any way and would definitely visit again.
