Measles warning after Qantas passenger falls ill

Health officials in New South Wales have warned passengers who travelled on a flight to Sydney from Manila to be alert to any developing sickness.

A fellow passenger contracted measles in the Philippines and was diagnosed after seeking medical attention in Australia.

The man in his 20s flew into Sydney on fight QF20 on January 11.

"If you develop symptoms, please call ahead to your GP so that you do not wait in the waiting room with other patients," said communicable diseases director Vicky Sheppeard.

NSW Health said travellers should ensure they are vaccinated before travelling to Southeast Asia as measles is still prevalent.

"Outbreaks of measles in popular tourist destinations mean the risk for measles being imported into Australia at the moment is high," it said in a statement.

It said there have been six cases of measles since Christmas.

Symptoms can take up to 12 days to develop after being infected.
