Mexico City to open another museum dedicated to iconic artist Frida Kahlo

Mexico City is set to deepen its connection to probably its most celebrated modern art figures. The opening of the Museo Casa Kahlo, nicknamed Casa Roja (“Red House”) will welcome the public from September 27. The museum is not the only one to pay homage to Mexico iconic artist. The Museo Casa Kahlo stands just next to  the famed Casa Azul, where Frida Kahlo lived and painted many of her masterpieces.

While Casa Azul captures the vibrant energy of Kahlo’s adult life and partnership with Diego Rivera, Casa Roja focuses on her formative years and family influences. Curators say visitors can expect an intimate, almost biographical journey through rarely seen personal artifacts, early sketches, and letters—plus a showstopper: the only known mural ever created by Kahlo.

The property itself is steeped in history. Originally owned by Kahlo’s family, the residence has undergone a careful restoration. Architects preserved the house 1920s character while adding contemporary exhibition spaces. According to museum organizers, interactive installations will explore the political and cultural climate that shaped Kahlo’s distinctive voice. It goes from her early exposure to indigenous Mexican art to her embrace of revolutionary ideals.

Added value to Mexico City as an art and culture destination

For travelers and tour groups, Casa Roja provides a fresh lens on an artist whose global influence continues to grow. It’s poised to complement Mexico City’s already formidable arts circuit, joining landmarks like Museo Dolores Olmedo, which houses an extensive Rivera and Kahlo collection, and the Museo de Arte Moderno, home to some of her most iconic works.

Located in Coyoacán, a leafy, historic district of cobblestone streets and lively plazas, the museum pairs naturally with local cafés, craft markets, and guided walking tours. Travel planners say a combined itinerary—Casa Azul in the morning, Casa Roja in the afternoon, followed by a lunch at a neighborhood cantina—offers a full-day immersion into Kahlo’s world.

The debut of Casa Roja turns Mexico City into an even more must-visit destination. Particularly to any tourist interested in arts, culture and of course, in Frida Kahlo extraordinary destiny.
