Two tourists were shot and killed at a Mexican resort.

Two men died at the Xcaret Hotel south of Playa del Carmen, and a woman was injured.

All three guests were Canadian.

Lucio Hernandez Gutierrez, secretary of public security for the state of Quintana Roo said it stemmed from an argument with another man.

The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office said the suspected attacker was also a guest from Canada.

CCTV stills were released clearly showing the suspect brandishing a gun.

"This is the first time a tourist has been the aggressor in a shooting," said. Vicente Carrera, the director of local news outlet Noticaribe, who was in the hotel at the time.

"Police, army, and National Guard personnel filled the hotel and closed off entry."

In recent months there has been an escalation of gun violence in Mexico’s Riviera Maya tourism region but has been exclusively between local drugs gangs.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador recently sent 1,500 members of the National Guard to increase tourist security in the region.
