Mexico’s National Guard boost tourist safety in Tulum
Mexico’s National Guard are patrolling the beaches of Tulum to boost tourist safety.
Armed troops have been patrolling beaches in the Tulum National Park since last week ahead of the spring break season.
Gabriel Bautista Tapia, Colonel Inspector of the National Guard said it is to ensure security and peace of mind for visitors.
There are foot and ATV patrols.
“The presence here is to preserve order, tranquility and the tourist safety,” he said.
There are about 50 National Guard personnel on Tulum beaches from Mezzanine to Santa Fe.
They have also increased their presence in Cancun and Los Cabos in recent weeks.

I was there in the last weeks and saw the intimidating forces, absolutely felt super unsafe with those machine guns, armed troops and ATVs (in Tulum) then a repeat of something similar including a helicopter intense low fly-by as a display (in Mahahual). I spoke to the special operations unit lead (GOE) and friendly as he was explaining why they were there for extra safety, the clash of highly armed officers walking around on the beach with people especially with young families was absolutely surreal. I’m sorry but it had the opposite effect and made us feel rather uncomfortable. Perhaps focusing efforts on root causes rather than parading a show of force could be time better spent.

What about protecting tourists in Hotels? I have lost clients who used to go every year to Cancun and Riviera Maya! They are worried about their safety and drinking alcohol! Thanks! This is first time I have posted anything!

Are you kidding???? The only people they are protecting are the drug dealers and people smugglers who use illegals to sell trinkets and food on the beaches. They serve only to look intimidating and nobody feels safer with them cruising around.
