Midcounties Co-op reaches landmark turnover
Midcounties Co-operative – which includes Midcounties Co-op Travel – has achieved a landmark turnover of £1 billion.
The figure is double that of 2005 when it was formed through a merger of West Midlands Co-op and Oxford, Swindon & Gloucester Co-op Societies.
Chief executive Ben Reid said: "We are thrilled as we believe that it shows consumers see increasing value in buying goods and services from an ethically run business that provides real support for the communities in which it trades."
The travel business has grown by 19 branches to a total of 54 as well as seeing the launch of the home working business ‘Personal Travel Agents at Coop Travel’ and the acquisition of Kwik Travel with more than 120 home-based specialists.
Group general manager of Travel, Alistair Rowland said the Coop Consortium will also boast a turnover in excess of £100m in its first year.
He said: "It has been a significant year for us in terms of growth which will help re-enforce the Coop brand in the independent Travel sector. We are profitable, on track and the leading independent Travel Co-operative’.
Midcounties employs more than 9,000 colleagues in businesses that include food stores and post offices, pharmacies, travel branches, funeral homes, employee benefits and childcare nurseries.
In March it was listed, for the third year running, by the Sunday Times as one of the 25 Best Big Companies to Work For, moving from 24th to 13th.
