Montreal tourism officials expect visitor numbers to surpass 10 million for the first time in 2016.
Tourisme Montreal says various metrics – hotel stays, border crossings into Quebec and airport arrivals are all up compared to 2015.
The number of international tourists including US travelers rose 10.7% from January to June, and Americans visiting during July was up 13% year over year, Tourisme Montreal said.
"Montreal is increasingly generating buzz," Tourisme Montreal president Yves Lalumiere said in a statement.
There was also a double digit rise in tourism arrivals from France but the big mover was the China market which is up a huge 205% compared to last year,
Lalumière credits this to the launch of a direct Beijing-Montreal flight in September 2015.
"It’s amazing. This is a market that will continue to increase sharply over the next 10 years and we need to look to Japan and Korea as well," he said.
