When iJet Travel Risk Management recently issued its “ten most terrorism-prone countries,” it came with a disclaimer: seldom-traveled countries such as Korea were left out. But another disclaimer: There’s far greater risk riding in an auto in the US than the potential of encountering terrorist acts here or in most countries. “Some destinations are more likely than others to experience terrorism, but the risk that terrorism poses to an individual traveler remains small,” said Rich Melody, vice president of the company’s Intelligence and Response Center Operations. The really biggest risk during a trip involves transportation. “That could involve weather or the infrastructure or a strike or something else to disrupt the trip,” added Sarah Slenker, a senior security analyst. Health is the second most likely issue to derail a trip. “That’s not necessarily a disease outbreak, but taking food and water precautions for a particular area or getting the right immunizations,” said Mr Melody. A third possible problem area is crime, often petty acts. “We’re not talking about terrorism, but someone having their laptop stolen, or their purse stolen,” said Mr Melody. The Annapolis, MD.-based iJet Travel Risk Management offers travel risk management services to corporations and others in the travel industry. In compiling their list of ten, the company rated terrorism as only one of six sub-categories used to calculate ratings. The ten “most terrorism-prone” were: Columbia, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Yemen. Report by David Wilkening
