Motorbike thieves, Travelavenue and Craigslist Joe

We are nearing the end of the second week of Wimbledon and as usual Andy Murray has us all on tenterhooks as he once again enters the semi-finals. So if like Princess Kate you can’t bear to watch, turn the TV on mute and take a moment to read our weekly social media round up.

The web might well be stuffed full of pictures of nudie ladies and kittens, but it can be a force for good too. Take www.motorbikethieves.com – a site set up by one disgruntled biker when his £10,000 machine was nicked. Despite having CCTV footage of the theft back in April, cops didn’t make much of an effort to help. What’s a law-abiding crime victim gonna do? How about let the world have a look at the villains and spread the word via social media! More than 7,000 people have shared it so far and @BikeVictim is now tweeting regular updates.

SWISS flyers will be pleased to hear that the airline is getting to grips with its social media. SWISS has decided to widened the range of customer services it provides via Facebook and Twitter so that customers can now use these online channels to contact the airline’s service centre at any time of the day or night with any inquiries or issues regarding flights, tickets and rebooking’s.

These days the majority of people carry with them a smartphone. And weirdly, it’s the ‘phone’ bit that is now becoming increasingly outmoded. A survey of 2,000 Brits has revealed that checking tweets, browsing the internet and listening to music on our handsets are all considered to be more popular than the original function of making calls. Actually talking is now a retro communication method, coming in fifth most-used function. The survey also discovered that alarm clocks, watches, cameras and diaries have all been usurped by modern technology.

We all know how much stress it can be trying to pin down your perfect holiday, well look no further, Travelavenue is a platform that offers to help travellers discover great places and helps to plan their trips efficiently. Like Pintrest it is an open community where people can pin and share content using images allowing users to collate their ideas into one place. There are also smart tools such as the Travelavenue pin-it button which enables you to bookmark the internet pages you want to remember.

And finally, social media and documentary meet with the cinema release of quirky fly-on-the-wall Craigslist Joe. The film follows one man’s journey across the US, surviving entirely on contacts he makes through US classified site Craigslist. With the use of only his iPhone and laptop filmmaker Joe Garner relies on the website to find everything from food and shelter to transportation and friends.
