Direct flights from Gladstone in to Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef will be introduced from February 5 for day trippers and island guests.
Lady Elliot Island is a true Great Barrier Reef coral cay where visitors enjoy snorkelling, scuba diving, turtle and whale watching, and reef walking.
Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited said its visitor information centres are always fielding requests for scenic day trips to the Reef and the new service will meet this need.
Seair will run 45 minute scenic flights from Thursdays to Mondays, offering lunch and a full day’s activities on the island including guided reef walk, fish feeding in the coral lagoon and glass bottom boat tour for $349 per adult and $172.50 per child (3-12 yrs).
Standard return flights for island guests (excluding accommodation) are $250 per adult and $125 per child.
Seair’s Peter Gash is a partner in a new venture now operating the Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort. He and fellow aviation businessman Grant Kenny and Gold Coast commercial lawyer Michael Kyle, recently announced plans for a multi-million dollar facelift for the resort after securing a long term lease from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).
Lady Elliot Island, 80km northeast of Bundaberg and 320km north of Brisbane, is the southern most inhabited island on the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s one of only three coral cays with a resort (the others being Heron and Green Islands) and the only one with its own airstrip.
The island’s snorkeling is world famous, with manta rays, turtles, giant clams, parrot fish and spectacular coral bommies.
Whales are common in winter and early spring and turtles use the island to nest from late October to Mid-February.
